Military rule good, civilian bad

Letter December 21, 2012
The ground reality is that most of the development in the country took place during military regimes.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to M Ziauddin’s article of December 19 titled “No more a cathartic debate”.

The writer seems to blame army rule in Pakistan for all its troubles and I do not agree with him. He says that the trouble in Pakistan started with the evacuee property and the licence culture. It is evident that this began after partition when the country was being ruled by civilians, not the military. The writer also praised Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for his nationalisation policy. However, it is widely acknowledged that this action proved disastrous for Pakistan’s economy.

Unfortunately, we have developed a habit of blaming the military regimes unnecessarily. The ground reality is that most of the development in the country took place during military regimes, especially during the Ayub period.
