Floating fence at Sir Creek?

Letter December 19, 2012
India plans to erect a ‘floating fence’ along the disputed Sir Creek border area with Pakistan.

RAWALPINDI: This is with reference to a report published recently in The Hindustan Times which said that India plans to erect a ‘floating fence’ anchored by submerged metallic mashes along the disputed Sir Creek border area with Pakistan. Sir Creek is a 96-kilometre-long strip of water in the Rann of Kutch marshlands and is disputed between India and Pakistan.

Reportedly, two Indian agencies, the National Buildings Construction Cooperation and the Central Public Works Department, have started fencing the area already. Since the creek is a disputed area, this action is bound to anger Pakistan and will be counterproductive. India should not do this because such a move will negate the spirit of confidence-building measures that both countries have undertaken of late.
