Spitting nation

Letter December 11, 2012
People who spit should think of the inconvenience they cause others by their bad habit.

LAHORE: I have always wondered why it is that people in Pakistan and probably nowhere else in the world, spit so much while walking on the streets. Surely, our anatomy cannot be different from that of people in other countries, so it clearly is a case of bad habits. I wonder how many of us realise that spitting in full public view is usually going to be quite disgusting for others watching — but of course, many of us still do it.

Why can’t we put an end to this disgusting and also unhealthy practice? After all, diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza and the common cold can be transmitted through spitting. And the irony is that when the same Pakistani, who has no problem spitting in full public view goes overseas, he behaves himself and does not do this in the foreign land. People who spit should think of the inconvenience they cause others by their bad habit. If we can’t keep our country clean which is the basic responsibility of the citizens of a country, then how can we progress as a nation?
