The best institution

Letter September 07, 2010
Ms Siddiqa is always highly critical of the Pakistan army and often it seems that her criticism is without foundation.

SHIKHUPURA: This is with reference to your report “Bad times bring new opportunities” (September 6) which quotes analyst Ayesha Siddiqa. Ms Siddiqa is always highly critical of the Pakistan army and often it seems that her criticism is without foundation. She should understand that it is not the military which is forcing the members of the ruling political party to breach the embankments or that it is the reason why politicians tend to make bad decisions. The same is the reason for Pakistan Steel’s financial ill-health or the fact that other government organisations are in the red.

The reality is that the ruling party itself is making a hash of governance and of its responsibility to provide security and safety to those who elected it to public office.

The fact also is that the army is the only patriotic institution of Pakistan which is not only defending its soil but also helping protect its people in their hour of need. That is the reason perhaps why it has so much say in policy making.
