No new regulatory body for dams

Letter September 07, 2010
There is alarming news for three out of four provinces, if press reports are to be believed.

KARACHI: There is alarming news for three out of four provinces, if press reports are to be believed. Wapda has proposed to the government that a regulatory body be set up to look after and maintain the dams and barrages in the country and this proposal has been supported by the federal minister for water and power, Raja Ashraf.  In my opinion, it is a deliberate effort to tighten the control of the majority province on the sensitive issue of water by forming a new body in which the manpower of Wapda can be accommodated. There is no need for another regulatory body since this will only add to government expenditures and also because the provinces all have existing mechanisms which monitor the various dams and barrages in their respective jurisdictions.
