Served with honour

Letter November 28, 2012
To defend themselves, some retired generals repeatedly quote sacrifices rendered by young shaheeds.

RAWALPINDI: To defend themselves, some retired generals repeatedly quote sacrifices rendered by young shaheeds, which is rather immoral and amounts to emotional blackmail of public sensitivities. Not allowing the generals to go unchecked, the politicians, in return, blame the armed forces overall as an institution. This causes immense pain to those who served their country by serving in its armed forces with honour and dignity and quietly said goodbye upon retirement. Many, including this writer, even spent some years in jail as POWs.

What do the retired generals mean when they say  “men of the armed forces have not liked the treatment meted out to their retired commanders?” It is time for them to say  ‘sorry’ and ride into the sunset. It will also enhance their stature in the public eye.
