Import of used cars

Letter November 28, 2012
I own an imported used car but spare parts were not available in the local market.

KARACHI: The decision taken by the government to reduce the age limit for importing used cars to three years should benefit those who want to have cheaper alternatives to buying expensive locally-assembled cars.

Buying an imported used car is not the issue; the issue arises when you spend your hard-earned income on a car sold to you on false pretext of being in excellent condition. I own an imported used car, a Toyota Allion, with a 1500 cc engine. It appeared to be in good condition at the time of purchase but after a while, it developed problems, quite shockingly with its suspension and shock absorbers. Spare parts were not available in the local market and had to be bought from Dubai at a very high price.

Now, with the reduced age limit for used cars, I will have the option of buying a car which will be relatively new. This also means reduced chances of old and rickety cars from overseas markets finding their way into Pakistan.
