A much-needed u-turn

Letter September 06, 2010
A u-turn on our Kashmir policy was indeed required.

ISLAMABAD: This in reference to Lt-Col (r) Muhammd Ali Ehasan’s letter of September 3 titled ‘U-turn on Kashmir’. A u-turn on our Kashmir policy was indeed required because we were throwing away all our precious resources on a situation which is no better than throwing one’s money down a bottomless pit.

Where does this all end? Do we really think that India is going to give us Kashmir? Or do we think that the people of Kashmir will be delighted to accede and join us?

The fact of the matter is that the Quaid wanted the new state of Pakistan to have good relations with India, in the same manner as America has with Canada. But the tragedy is that after his death this was hijacked by the military establishment.

The only offensive that Pakistan needs in the region is one that will bring it and its neighbours, particularly India, peace. Having said that, the military is doing a fine job in battling the militants and in helping the civil administration in flood relief — and these are the activities that are well within constitutional parameters and boundaries.
