LAHORE: This is with reference to your report “Suicide attack in Quetta kills 55” (September 3). Processions have been happening even before Pakistan’s creation so this argument is really untenable since by doing so the government is merely absolving itself of its responsibility of providing security to citizens. Instead of suggesting a ban on processions, the government needs to improve intelligence-gathering with regard to the sectarian and militant outfits and try and smash them through sending agents undercover. Apart from this, the issue of foreign funding of many of these organisations also needs to be investigated because it seems that some countries are simply carrying out what amount to nothing more than proxy wars on Pakistani territory.
The question to ask is that why aren’t any of the attackers or their handlers ever caught.
