Balochistan unrest

Letter November 03, 2012
It is time for the federal government to intervene in the interest of the people of the province.

ISLAMABAD: According to a report in your newspaper, the speaker of the Balochistan Assembly refused to convene the assembly’s session, despite advice from the chief minister to requisition it. Presumably, a recent observation by the Supreme Court into the working of the Balochistan government may have been cause for this. Furthermore, the party membership of the chief minister has been suspended for three months by the PPP’s president for Kalat district.

This clearly means that there is a revolt against Mr Raisani in his own party. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has already given a clear verdict about the failure of the provincial government in the matter of governance and ensuring law and order for the province’s residents. In such a situation, people want to know what is the justification for Mr Raisani to continue as the executive head of the provincial government. Balochistan is facing serious political and constitutional challenges. It is time for the federal government to intervene in the interest of the people of the province.
