ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Ejaz Haider’s article “The Pervez Hoodbhoy-LUMS dispute” (October 31). This piece by Mr Haider is a clear manifestation of shoddy journalism. He has quoted Sayer’s law, which only serves to mirror his cynicism. He has selectively quoted cases from Lums without giving the proper context behind those cases. There are many over-60-year-olds, who are teaching at Lums as visiting faculty. Moreover, Professor Hoodbhoy sent a detailed letter to Adil Najam and others at Lums on October 15 that asked for detailed reasons behind the refusal to renew his contract. It has been two weeks and no one at Lums has responded yet. If the Lums management has adequate reasons for not renewing his contract, why is it keeping them hidden?
Meanwhile, the dirty brigade is commenting about Professor Hoodbhoy’s remarriage and Ayesha Siddiqa’s job applications. Truly hitting below the belt. I wonder at whose behest is this dirty brigade working? The truth is that vocal opponents of the military establishment — whether they be Professor Hoodbhoy, AH Nayyar or Ayesha Siddiqa — are hounded out of academic institutions. It seems that powerful circles in the country do not want people of conscience to have comfortable institutional lives and affiliations.
