Land of no consequences (II)

Letter September 03, 2010
I agree democracy has faults, but it is still far better than any other system.

NIDERRAU, GERMANY: With regard to Ayesha Ijaz Khan’s article I agree democracy has faults, but it is still far better than any other system. That said, the impatience that we see in Pakistan is prevalent in countries where democracy has no stable base. Pakistan needs change of government through the ballot and this needs to happen at least a couple of times before we accept the system as durable. In the long run, we must think of ways to make democracy more meaningful for the people because that is the best way for it to be sustainable. This can be done by proper land reform so that those elected are not the rich few.

But even that should come as part of an evolution and not abrupt change.
