PESHAWAR: In a recent press conference, Afghan President Hamid Karzai stated in relation to the attack on Malala Yousufzai: “I hope this … has convinced our brothers and sisters, the officials in Pakistan ... that using extremism [terrorists] as a tool against others [referring to Afghanistan] is not in the interest of Pakistan.” This statement is truly unbecoming of the president of what is supposed to be a friendly neighbouring state.
Instead of being grateful to Pakistan for providing support and shelter to millions of Afghan refugees, he is accusing it for the unrest in his country. Has Mr Karzai ever made an analysis of what his own government is doing? Does he need reminding that since 2009, Maulana Fazlullah, after fleeing Swat, has been using ‘his’ territory against Pakistan? Is it, then, Pakistan harbouring terrorists or Afghanistan? Such irresponsible statements are a clear manifestation of the apathy of the Afghan government towards the sacrifices rendered by the people of Pakistan in the war on terror.
