NEW YORK: This is with reference to Talat Hussain’s article “Get another passport” (September 1). It seems that the liberal lynch mob is hell-bent on proving that we have failed as a society. They cite role models, poverty, social strata and such other examples to prove their point. I acknowledge that Pakistan has had its fair share of problems but this does not mean that we become dire pessimists day after day after day.
What they fail to understand is that every society in this world has bad apples and they sprout up here and there to remind us of the darkness omnipresent in humanity. For example, please remember Lalit Modi’s Gujarat. Where were the lynch mobbers at the time that this happened? Rest assured that those horrific scenes were equal in magnitude to the ones in Sialkot. At least in Sialkot the police officers have been arrested. What happened to Modi and his goons? Nothing. Does this mean that I am deflecting my arguments onto another country? No. We need to do some rigorous soul-searching on. But that does not mean we become ashamed of who we are. If people still find themselves ashamed of being Pakistani, please move to another place right away, your country and your people don’t need wimps like you.
