KARACHI: According to media reports, around 10 people have so far died in different hospitals of Karachi due to the brain-eating amoeba or Naegleria fowleri, since May this year. Senior physicians are still clueless about how to stem the spread of this much dreaded amoeba. Media reports further say that swimming in public pools with improper arrangement for chlorination is believed to be one of the main causes of contracting the amoeba infection.
It is suggested that administrators of all clubs that have swimming pools should ensure proper arrangements for chlorination of their swimming pools regularly. All pools must be cleaned before refilling them with water. Similarly, no individual must be allowed to swim unless he/she has obtained a medical certificate from a skin specialist stating that the person has no skin disease. Moreover, swimmers should not be allowed to enter the pool without taking a shower.
