Menace of celebratory firing

Letter October 03, 2012
The menace of firing to celebrate various events has become tradition of sorts, which resulted in deaths and injuries.

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi celebrated Pakistan’s qualification for the semi-finals of the 2012 World Twenty20 at the Five-Star Chowrangi through a fireworks display. But disturbingly, another aspect of the celebrations was the firing that took place in the area, as well as in other parts of the city too. It is good to see people celebrate victory but resorting to firing shots in the air is not the way to go about it. The menace of firing to celebrate various events, such as weddings, chand raat, Independence Day, cricket team victories, etc has almost become a tradition of sorts in Pakistan, which has at times resulted in deaths and injuries. The government must ban celebratory firing and the media must also play a role in discouraging this practice.
