Water problems

Letter October 02, 2012
There are streets in phase six of Hayatabad where drinking water has not been made available for the last five years.

PESHAWAR: The performance of the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) has been in decline for the last few years, especially with regard to water supply and plantation in the Hayatabad locality of the city. Residents of Hayatabad are paying their housing taxes and water charges regularly but the environment of the suburb is still in decline. Water taps installed in the green belts of Hayatabad are left open at odd times of the day and no one bothers to stop the unnecessary wastage of water caused. Nobody in the PDA seems to be too bothered about this state of affairs.

There are streets in phase six of Hayatabad where drinking water has not been made available for the last five years (excluding two or three days every second or third month). This problem had already been brought to the attention of the PDA. The inspector responsible to ensure water supply never attends to the complaints of the suffering residents. Another problem is that of plantation. The PDA digs up holes in different parts of Hayatabad twice a year but often neglects to plant anything in them. In cases, where plantation does happen, the PDA administration does not make arrangements to water them regularly.

I request the director general of the PDA to take the departments concerned to task and provide the residents relief from mental torture when it comes to ensuring the availability of drinking water and a greener Hayatabad.
