BAGH: Iran has recently barred female students from enrolling in most of its universities. The reason given by the government is that it will help correct the male-female ratio for university students, which it says is currently skewed in favour of women. Even if this argument is accepted, one has to wonder why such an approach is being adopted since it ends up depriving thousands of women of their right to higher education. Wouldn’t a better route be for Iran to open new universities and make them only for male students?
I wonder why no one is protesting against this. When French universities ban the wearing of the hijab by female students, there is great hue and cry over the issue, so why not over this? Furthermore, I have yet to see a single article or show on this issue in our print or electronic media.
