ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article “Cutting off our noses …” (September 28). In his article, the writer calls for the giving up of jihad. I believe it is not a question of giving up jihad. It is a question of understanding the true meaning of the word and its essence. The maulvi hazraat, as he rightly pointed out, can never even dream of enlightening Pakistanis about this as they themselves are a product of a narrow-minded society.
No matter how many articles Mr Shafi writes in an English newspaper, the print media has to realise that many of our more widely read Urdu newspapers are responsible for selling extremist trash to an already bigoted, holier-than-thou society. And if this continues, I am afraid that no one will be spared. The Ahmadis have been witness to this ugliness for many years now, the Shias are the more recent target, and very soon the rest will also be targeted. We need something to be done on an urgent basis to save this society from self-destruction. My only fear is, that perhaps, it is already too late.
