Suspension of mobile phone services

Letter September 24, 2012
The government needs to come up with other sensible preventive measures, rather than causing distress to the people.

LAHORE: It seems that to suspend mobile phone services owing to security threats will soon become the norm. On the occasion of Youm-e-Ishq-e-Rasool, mobile phone connections were suspended again to thwart any potential terrorist attack. The authorities concerned need to understand that mobiles have become a major mode of communication and can also be used for disaster management purposes, in case of a terrorist attack.

This particular step of suspending mobile phone facilities could have backfired spectacularly, as blocking a major communication channel could have actually facilitated terrorists planning to cause mischief. The government needs to come up with other sensible preventive measures, rather than causing distress to the people.
