NEW YORK: This is with reference to Hussain Naqi’s article “A tribute to Nisar Osmani sahib” (September 8). As a young boy in the mid-1950s, I used to visit my older brother in the summers, who lived in Lahore and had just started his law practice. My brother knew Nisar Osmani sahib and I used to visit him with my brother. I was very fascinated by the black and white photos of various leaders like President Dwight Eisenhower, which adorned his room.
As I grew up, I started following his writings in Dawn. He was a giant of Pakistani journalism and was not afraid to report the truth under the repressive martial law regimes of rulers such as Field Marshal Ayub Khan and General Ziaul Haq. I always admired him for his boldness. He wrote without fear of repercussion and was a true journalist with high moral character. Even when I moved to the US in 1970, I continued to follow his articles as they gave a good overview of the situation back home. I miss his writings but I am thankful that we had people like Osmani sahib, who made a difference in this world with their contributions.
