Statistics suggest that substantial number of women will become victims of rape or attempted rape in their lifetimes.
NIDDERAU, GERMANY: This is with reference to Bina Shah’s article of August 23 titled “Understanding feminism”, which was wellwritten and wellargued. I was just reading the other day that gender-based violence in Third World countries causes more deaths and disabilities among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria and traffic accidents.
Furthermore, in many parts of the world those who have daughters cannot ignore the fact that every year millions of girls are sexually assaulted at or en route to school. Statistics suggest that a substantial number of women will become victims of rape or attempted rape in their lifetimes. Surveys also suggest that one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime and not just once.
In countries such as Pakistan, there are additional handicaps for women. Many are kept indoors and have no contact with the outside world and do not know what the word ‘equality’ even means. They get married and carry on treating their daughters just like how they themselves were treated.
