Hate crime legislation and Objectives Resolution

Letter August 18, 2012
The country needs more than a bill that Ms Ispahani had envisaged presenting to get out of this predicament.

NEW YORK: This is with referene to Farahnaz Ispahani’s article “Hate crime legislation” (August 17). In a word Pakistan’s problem is the ‘Qadrification’ of society. No judge or court can sentence Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri to a punishment that fits his crime of murdering former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer in broad daylight. The lawyers are showering him with petals. Meanwhile, the country’s Hindu population is in ‘exodus mode’.

The country needs more than a bill that Ms Ispahani had envisaged presenting to get out of this predicament. The 1949 Objectives Resolution is the root cause of many of the problems we are facing today. Something needs to be done to set right this historical wrong,
