Pakistan’s Olympic history

Letter August 05, 2012
I was disappointed to see that a country with a population as large as ours has only won 10 medals till now.

KARACHI: Since the London Olympics are currently underway, I decided to do a bit of research to find out exactly how many medals Pakistan has won over the years at the Games. I was disappointed to see that a country with a population as large as ours has only won 10 medals till now, in all the Olympic Games that it has participated in. The breakdown of the medals won by Pakistan is three golds, three silvers and four bronze medals.

All three gold medals and eight of the 10 total medals were won by our field hockey team. Pakistan also won a bronze medal in wrestling in 1960 and in boxing in 1988. Pakistan’s performance can be placed in perspective when one considers that there are 326 individual Olympic athletes who have won three or more gold medals.

Clearly, we need to place more priority on sport as a nation.
