Winning at the Olympics

Letter August 02, 2012
I am not trying to deride Bindra’s achievement because he still had to beat the best in the world to achieve the gold.

NEW DELHI: This is with reference to Kamal A Munir’s article “Who is winning medals at the Olympics, and why?” (August 2). This is a good article although it may not have all the answers but it does have some.

I would just like to add that Abhinav Bindra, who won the gold for India in shooting at the Beijing Olympics, has a father, who is a multimillionaire. He made a private shooting range for his son to practise on. I am not trying to deride Bindra’s achievement because he still had to beat the best in the world to achieve the gold. I am just trying to highlight the fact that not every child receives this kind of an opportunity.
