Military expenditures

Letter July 16, 2012
Military should volunteer to cut its massive annual expenditure and let Pakistan become a welfare state.

SWANSEA, UK: This is with reference to Shahbaz Asif Tahir’s letter of July 16 titled “A challenge to the propagandists” where he was responding to Kamran Shafi’s article of the same name. The “finest institution” that Mr Tahir is referring to maintains its class at the cost of the nation being kept hungry, illiterate and without access to any medical care or proper housing.

If the said institution were as fine as Mr Tahir paints it to be, it should seriously look at reasons for our national decay and degeneration and decide whether things are to continue as they are or if there must be some change. In case of the latter, the military should volunteer to cut its massive annual expenditure and let Pakistan become a welfare state rather than the security state that it is at present.
