Lowly-paid engineer

Letter July 07, 2012
Since 2008, our salaries have not been increased at all.

KARACHI: I am an engineer working with the Pakistan Steel Mills. The problem with my job is that I get paid far less compared with what engineers earn, even in other public sector organisations. For instance, since 2008, our salaries have not been increased at all. Furthermore, the present salary of an assistant XEN (executive engineer) in Grade 17 is a mere Rs18,000, while in other government organisations engineers make more than twice that! In the last three months or so, several of our engineers have left the organisation and the future doesn’t look too rosy for those who have chosen to continue. Who will come to our rescue?

An engineer
