LAHORE: According to some news reports, farmers in Sindh are suffering up to 35 per cent shortage of water at the Guddu and Sukkur barrages, which increases to 60 per cent for farmers at the Kotri barrage. Someone should tell them that with the increasing demands of a fast-increasing population, the shortages are going to rise every year. The last increase in water supplies was 36 years ago, when the Tarbela Dam was commissioned and Sindh was able to cultivate an additional 27 lakh acres of land. Sindh can either get a further increase in water supplies through building the Kalabagh Dam in five years’ time or through the Bhasha Dam in over 12 years’ time. The choice is theirs.
