A futile exercise

Letter July 05, 2012
Upon being fined, the driver of the noisiest rickshaw will climb the nearest power pylon and threaten to end his life.

LAHORE: This is with reference to the news item about the planned action against noisy and smoke emitting vehicles in Lahore by the Punjab government and reader Adeel Ahmed’s letter “Noisy vehicles” (July 4) in this newspaper. Be assured, nothing will come out of this exercise.

Upon being fined, the driver of the noisiest rickshaw will climb the nearest power pylon and threaten to end his life. Others of his tribe will join him in protest on the ground. The fining official will duly be suspended and the drama called off. That will be the end of it all. Ear-splitting rickshaws will continue to ply unchecked. This is no imaginary scenario. We have seen it happen at the Babu Sabu interchange and we will see it happen again elsewhere in Lahore.
