To form a government, Imran Khan will need at least 130 members in parliament.
HYDERABAD, INDIA: This is with reference to Arif Rafiq’s article “The PTI’s rude awakening” (June 28). It seems that Pakistanis are yet to learn about parliamentary democracy. It is not like the US where the most popular man wins. The government is decided by the composition of the members of parliament.
To form a government, Imran Khan will need at least 130 members in parliament, if not more. That means he should have at least 130 winning candidates. Does he have them? This also means that his party has to contest in at least 240 constituencies, if not more, to have a chance of winning enough seats to form a government. Does he have the required number of electable candidates? Further, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) needs to have proper organisation to get them elected. This means that the PTI needs to have dedicated workers all over the country. Does he have them? Do people all over the country recognise his election symbol in order to vote for him? Imran Khan and the PTI need to make sure that they have all the correct ingredients at their disposal before conjuring up dreams of sweeping elections and forming the government.
