KARACHI: This is with reference to Ali Wahab’s article ‘’Remembering Ammi” (June 26). The passing away of Ms Wahab is indeed a huge loss for the nation and the PPP. I believe that her death is a bigger loss for the PPP than the disqualification of Yousaf Raza Gillani as prime minister.
In the past, the PPP used to have in its fold many middle class, progressive elements, particularly from Karachi. Over the years, most of these people left the PPP and Ms Wahab happened to be the most visible of those left in the party fold. She was the progressive, middle class face of a political party that many believe represents Pakistan’s rich feudal class only. Today, there are several women visible on the national political scene but most of them are the progeny of important male politicians, who seem to lack substance when seen on TV during talk shows. Ms Wahab, on the other hand, always conducted herself with civility and humility and exuded substance and class.
