The FO on Dr Afridi verdict (III)

Letter May 26, 2012
In due course, once this issue has died down, in all likelihood he will be quietly released, allowed to leave country.

ISLAMABAD: America doesn’t really care if Dr Afridi is imprisoned or not, but the actual concern behind his sentence is that other local informants will stop supplying information. Furthermore, given the sympathy for the Taliban and al Qaeda in many quarters of Pakistan, it is probably a good thing that Dr Afridi is in prison because that may ensure his security for the time being. In due course of time, once this issue has died down, in all likelihood he will be quietly released and allowed to leave the country.
