KARACHI: What Tazeen Javed has written about, while distressing, is not really all that surprising. The clergy has usually always been against women. It tries to legitimise its misogyny by giving it the cover of religion so that the women get intimidated. Men have for centuries used religion as a way to keep women under their feet. Teaching girls to be ashamed of their bodies and to be ashamed of their gender, teaching them that they are inferior to their brothers and husbands and that the relationship between husband and wife is essentially one of slave and master. The mullahs exploit religion to give their misogyny societal acceptance.
