LAHORE: This is with reference to Mazhar Abbas’s article of May 4 titled “What’s in a photograph?”.
Yes, times are changing but we, as a nation, are slow learners. We showed the same attitude when radio, loudspeakers, television, VCRs and computers began to be increasingly used in other countries. Gradually — till the world laughed at us — we accepted them and began using them.
One wonders what criteria religious scholars had when they opposed these devices and what authority have they exercised to now accept them as being okay to use. One suspects that it was nothing except whim. Even if that is so, perhaps the same reasoning can be applied to other prohibitions.
