Regressive nation

Letter May 04, 2012
We showed highly regressive attitude over every other technological innovation, be it radio, TV, VCR or the computer.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Mazhar Abbas’ article “What’s in a photograph?” (May 4). I believe that we, as a nation, have always been slow learners. We showed a highly regressive attitude over every other technological innovation, be it the radio, TV, VCR or the computer.

We only started accepting these innovations as the norm after much hesitancy. One wonders what criterion religious scholars had when they opposed these devices and what authority have they now exercised to deem them ‘Islamic’. One suspects that when they opposed these devices, it was nothing more than a means to satisfy their orthodox, highly conservative whim.
