Trusting the police

Letter April 05, 2012
Pakistanis possess a healthy distrust for the police because of the highhandedness they have suffered at their hands.

KARACHI: Recently, the chief minister of Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, asked police officers to make police stations a ‘symbol of protection’ for the oppressed where the complainant is respected and is provided complete justice.

I would like to point out that Pakistanis possess a healthy distrust for the police because of the highhandedness they have suffered at their hands for a very long time. However, if the police department reforms its ways, cooperates with the citizenry in solving its problems and performs its duties honestly, all that might just change, and people may just start regarding police stations as ‘symbols of protection’.
