‘I’m not a peon’

Letter March 23, 2012
Language used by Gilani would be seen as demeaning by anyone who actually works as a peon.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in a recent remark said that he was a “PM, not a peon”. While one can understand the context in which he may have said this, the language used would be seen as demeaning by anyone who actually works as a peon. It could be argued by many that what the prime minister has said reflects a classist view of society and, hence, is inappropriate.
