Not interfering in politics is not a decision that General Kayani has to make, but a requirement of his oath.
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article “Of comeuppances, and superior airs” (March 16). The writer has quoted the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who said that he had “taken a conscious decision” to keep his institution out of politics. The writer feels that Kayani has displayed ‘arrogance to even think in this way’. I completely agree with the sentiments of the writer. Not interfering in politics is not a decision that General Kayani has to make, but a requirement of his oath that calls upon him to uphold the constitution. The law of land and the constitution does not leave this decision at Kayani’s behest.
