PESHAWAR: The revelations made by Younis Habib in the Supreme Court in the Mehrangate scandal have been common knowledge for those who have observed our political system and the role of our establishment in the making and breaking of governments. Only someone with extreme dislike for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) can overlook the shenanigans of our agencies and their cohorts among political parties, in bringing down the PPP government in 1990. It is remarkable that a 16-year-old petition has caught many political leaders — who over time have become champions of democracy — with their pants down. Their denials notwithstanding, the people of Pakistan know the real origins of these so-called ‘khadims of awam’.
However, there are elements in the Pakistani media who are always ready to twist facts in order to fool people into believing complete lies. Already some sections of the media have started a campaign of sorts to connect Habib to President Asif Zardari. The only hope, therefore, is for the Supreme Court to deliver justice and expose all those who have harmed democracy in the country.
