Current army chief asked the supreme court to decide the matter of his date of birth, and hence his age of retirement.
JUBAIL, SAUDI ARABIA: Lieutenant-General Bikram Singh will be the next army chief of India and will take over from incumbent General V K Singh on May 31. The latter will step down by that date after losing his case in the Indian Supreme Court, where he had filed a petition asking the court to decide the matter of his date of birth, and hence his age of retirement. (The court had declined to get involved, and more or less, referred the matter to the government to decide.)
I wonder how a mere communiqué from the central government is sufficient on such a critical appointment. There was no appearance of a nervous prime minister on state television to make this ‘crucial’ announcement, as perhaps may be the case for Pakistan. There were neither any heated debates on television channels and nor were there any fiery press conferences held by politicians voicing opinions on the matter.
