How to win an Oscar (III)

Letter March 03, 2012
The moral of the story is that it is easy to kick someone when he or she is down.

ISLAMABAD: For those who are criticising the writer — and there seem to be quite a few such critics — they need to answer one simple question. Have you heard of the critically-acclaimed, yet mostly-ignored documentary “The Invisible War”? It was made and released last year and won no award.

There is also “Taxi Drive to the Dark Side” and it only got picked up for awards and nominations because George W Bush was almost universally loathed by the time it was made. So the moral of the story is that it is easy to kick someone when he or she is down. This also kind of explains why “Inside Job” won last year — it was critical of America’s banking industry at a time when the country was in a deep recession.
