Precautions against acid attacks (II)

Letter March 01, 2012
Sharmeen is going to embark on a campaign to eliminate this menace from Pakistani society.

KARACHI: There are those who think, or perhaps used to till the Oscar win, that by making a documentary on the issue of acid attacks on women, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had brought a bad name to Pakistan. And now those same critics have been proven so wrong. As for the issue itself, it is commendable that, as per the Oscar winner’s mother, she is going to embark on a campaign to eliminate this menace from Pakistani society.

While the intention is noble, perhaps the biggest push any such campaign will get is if the government and its law-enforcement and judicial mechanism vigorously pursue such cases to their logical end. Unless those who throw acid on women are arrested and convicted for their crimes, the menace is unlikely to go away.
