LAHORE: After reading a report in your newspaper on the passage of the Twentieth Amendment, two things come to mind. The first is that the bill seems to pave the way for the establishment of an independent and powerful election commission and a neutral caretaker regime for holding fair and impartial general elections. In this context, this could be called landmark legislation.
The second has to do with the fact that the passage of the said Amendment has also brought about the restoration of 28 suspended lawmakers. This would give an observer the impression that, perhaps, the legislation was passed so that the MPs could be restored and if that is indeed the case, then the question arises that was there, perhaps, an ulterior motive?
