The Zamzama trade

Letter February 15, 2012
Not saying majority of Defence residents are customers but would be fair to say majority of customers live in Defence.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Hammad Sarfaraz’s Speaker’s Corner titled “Karachi ignores the trade at Zamzama”.

His article reminded me of a conversation me and my friends just had a fortnight ago. We were on our way for dinner and happened to pass by Zamzama and the Khadda market area and, just like the writer mentioned, one could spot quite a few women whose services could be hired for money. Discussion between me and my friends started, and my friends who live in Defence (meaning in a bubble), were quick to pass judgement that this should not be allowed in this area since it was frequented by families. I disagreed saying that such a trade would happen where it could find demand for it.

I am not saying that a majority of the residents of Defence are customers of such services but it would be fair to say that a majority of the customers do reside in Defence and surrounding areas. Many of the area’s residents come from the upper echelons of society so they would consider themselves above the law. It’s quite a shame that we have people who would use such services in the first place but the solution to this must be found from within society and would have to address the issue of demand.
