KARACHI: A city of more than 18 million, Karachi has a long history of violence. Ethnic, religious and sectarian disputes are common. Political rows also often explode into battles, engulfing entire neighbourhoods. Karachi has frequently seen turf wars between gangs supported by political parties. Every politician says that the city is the country’s main economic hub but does not try to promote peace in it.
The present government has failed in providing protection to the residents of the city. In July-August 2011 alone, an astonishing 344 people fell victims to target killings. Such killings and sectarian tensions have started again recently. Lawyers, political workers and employees working at mobile phone outlets have been attacked.
It is the basic right of all citizens that the government ensures their safety but unfortunately it has failed in carrying out this most basic of responsibilities.
