GUILDFORD, UK: This is with reference to Kamran Asdar Ali’s article o January 14 titled “Populism and its discontents”. It has been said that democracy is a messy process but compared to other forms of government, it is the best.
Since independence, periodically, we Pakistanis have been experimenting with democracy but have failed. The major reason is military interventions, at regular intervals. In no other democratic country would a government or citizens have accepted the statement that the military recently made over the memogate controversy. Also, it is quite unlikely that the US Supreme Court would ever hear such a petition because it has shown to always refuse matters that are political in nature. The present government is inept and inefficient but that doesn’t mean we get rid of it. What we need is to fix it without having to turn to either the judiciary or the military.
