MEMPHIS, TN, US: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article of January 6 titled “Rename it if you must”. The writer seems to be obsessed with the ISI. He conveniently overlooks the fact that it was the PPP whose leader, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, refused to accept the mandate won by the Awami League, and that led to the country’s division.
The legacy of his rule was nationalisation and that of Benazir Bhutto was corruption and mismanagement. The end result, which Pakistanis are suffering even today, is a virtual disintegration of most state institutions and public enterprises. And the icing on the proverbial cake, so to speak, was the National Reconciliation Ordinance, which allowed the PPP yet another stint in power.
