Dr Baqir silenced (II)

Letter December 30, 2011
Supreme Court should use its suo motu authority to investigate the murder of Dr Baqir Shah.

LAHORE: Instead of using its precious time on the memogate issue, I would request the honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan to use its suo motu authority to investigate the murder of Dr Baqir Shah. He has already been assaulted once before, during the time he testified before the judicial inquiry into the Kharotabad killings and of late had been receiving death threats. Why didn’t the Balochistan government see to it that adequate security was provided to him? I read that after his murder the chief minister of the province ordered an inquiry by the provincial police chief. Given that his evidence before the judicial commission implicated members of law-enforcement agencies, and two senior police officials were dismissed from service, how can the police be expected to conduct an independent inquiry?
