CNG deaths

Letter December 22, 2011
The Prime Minister should order a country-wide public safety emergency.

LAHORE: This is with reference to the several recent tragedies that have taken place in the country as public transport vehicles fitted with CNG kits have experienced explosions caused by leaking gas. In the past couple of weeks alone, four such accidents have happened in which dozens of precious lives were lost.

I would request the prime minister to take prompt notice of this because this is an issue of utmost public importance. He should order a country-wide public safety emergency. Under this, no public transport vehicle should be allowed to run till such time until its CNG cylinder and gas kit are inspected and approved by a competent official. We all know that fitness certificates for vehicles can be purchased for a price — this also must stop because this is akin to playing with the lives of innocent people.
