LONDON: This is with reference to Air Vice-Marshal Shahzad Chaudhry’s article of December 19, titled “A way out of memogate”.
If one were to go by what the air marshal has said, the politicians will get a fresh mandate. And what about the generals? They seem to continue to lord over us and award themselves extensions. So the generals can contribute to a situation that forces an election but won’t resign themselves?
And what happens if the outcome of the result is not “satisfactory”? Then what? What if the PPP is voted back into power? Will the generals flex their muscles again? There is nothing absurd in the ISI chief going and seeking the blessings of certain Arab states since they were guarantors of several political milestones in Pakistan, involving both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. Also, we must not forget that the sitting army chief was instrumental in negotiating the National Reconciliation Ordinance that was pushed through by his former boss, General Pervez Musharraf.
